Zero-Project – Fairytale

Zero-Project

GENRE: Classical, Instrumental, Ambient, ChoralIt worth a try!

Label: Jamendo
Release date: 2010
Total running time: 0:47:27
Since I started composing and publishing music at the end of 2007, I had a little dream: A music fairytale, a story that evolves through music and has all these elements of an original fairytale: Fairies, knights, castles and -of course- a beautiful princess. Now, a couple of years later, this dream became true… Album starts with a remake of “Winter princess”, one of my first published songs. Music trip continues, with a moon waltz and a fairy dance, to a forest with unicorns and a forgotten castle… After a battle with darkness knights, there is a king who returns home, giving his princess a message of love. At the end of this fairytale, there is an intro of Cinderella story. I preferred an intro instead of an ending, because, when a story ends, another one begins… I am thankful to JB-Anastasia for giving her voice to this Cinderella intro. However, “End of a story” is the end song of the fairytale, but not of the album. After a fairytale adventure, “Dreamland” is fine for relaxing… This is the second remake of an older song. I am also thankful to “The Copyright Group” for allowing me to use at “Bless and glory” a part of Oscar Wilde’s “Vita nuova” poem, told so lyrical by actor Sean Barrett, recorded by Robert J. Nichol.

Jozef van Wissem – A Priori

Jozef van Wissem

GENRE: Classical, MinimalismIt worth a try!

Label: INCUNABULUM
Release date: 2008
Total running time: 0:37:23
Jozef Van Wissem’s favorite compositional device is the palindrome. The Dutch-born, Brooklyn-based lutenist plays pieces forward, then backward, creating music that is potentially without beginning or end. Although this strategy is rooted in 17th century compositional practice, it still serves his agenda of rescuing his archaic instrument from history’s dustbin. His use of mirror-image structures is as informed by Lacanian psychoanalysis as by centuries-old repertoire. A former guitarist with a taste for country blues, Van Wissem came to the instrument as a way of affirming with his essential European-ness; ironically he used an artifact of the Renaissance to accomplish the decidedly post-Freudian pursuit of self-consciously establishing a self-identity. On an even more symbolic level, by constructing pieces that begin where they end and are therefore potentially endless, he subverts the march of time; why can’t obsolescence also be reversed?
On other records, Van Wissem has re-contextualized the lute by treating its sounds with electronics, juxtaposing it with field recordings of large public transit facilities, using it to improvise with Tetuzi Akiyama, or enlisting Mauricio Bianchi to transform its resonance into grim noise. A Priori offers his unadulterated take on the instrument, performed without accompaniment or outboard effects. Its sonorities, articulated in unhurried cadences, may sound ancient, but the language of dissonant harmonies, tone clusters, and rare bluesy flourishes to which he applies them is rooted in the 20th century avant-garde, not the time of bards in tights. The way Van Wissem traces and retraces A Priori’s seven palindromes, denying the listener any resolution or catharsis, is also pretty contemporary in its attitude of refusal; has there ever been a time besides now when more musicians refuted the expectations of audiences and authorities?
A Priori does not reward casual listening. Its slow cadences and well-proportioned tones feel contemplative, but the lack of pay-off makes the music potentially maddening; it actually stymies linear thought. If you want easily approachable Van Wissem, try his album he and James Blackshaw made as the Brethren of the Free Spirit. This record is best approached as obsessively as it was played. Spin it over and over and eventually the pieces really do lose beginning and end, seeming instead to hover in a timeless now. – By Bill Meyer

Rushus – Stories

Rushus

GENRE: Jazz, Jazz-Rock, Progressive, AmbientIt worth a try!

Label: RAIG
Release date: 2008
Total running time: 0:26:26
The man who stands behind Moscow-based instrumental bands THE RE-STONED and RUSHUS is a composer, guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Ilya Lipkin whose interests, talents, experiences and crafts are manifold and diverse. He spent the early part of his career playing in various local bands including the legendary dark-folk act NEUTRAL and the defiant avant-core trio YARCHE-1000-SOLNTS, before forming his own acoustic neo-folk ensemble WALDSONNE in 2003. Three years later, he launched an experimental-fusion project RUSHUS that featured a former member of the Tuvinian groups BIOSYNTES and YAT-KHA Evgeniy Tkachev on acoustic percussions and congas, and a jazz-master Vladimir Nikulin on electric bass. Their intelligent and elegant electro-acoustic softness and trance-induced shamanism made them more popular among lovers of neo-psychedelic and cafe-shop lobbyists than jazz and rock purists.
Performed by Ilya Lipkin (guitars), Evgeniy Tkachev (percussion) and Vladimir Nikulin (bass). Tracks 1, 2, 3 were recorded at the Rushus Studio by the band; mixed and mastered by Alisa Coral at the KZI Studios (Moscow, Autumn 2008). Tracks 4, 5 were recorded live at the Kostarev studios; mixed and mastered by Alexander Kostarev. “Stories” includes previously unpublished tracks.

Andy Wagner – Horse Year

Andy Wagner

GENRE: Rock, Indie, Country RockIt worth a try!

Label: Rock Proper
Release date: 2003
Total running time: 0:34:31
Horse Year plays like a funeral mass, each track an ethereally-charged dirge that draws us in. “Weak in the Knees” churns to life amid a settling fog, regretful, accompanied by a church organ send-off. “Don’t worry ‘bout me / You can still carry on / ‘Cause I’ll be dead when you’re gone,” Wagner opines, though you might imagine this as the message of a man looking back from the next world. “Nothing to Defend” juxtaposes soaring guitar riffs and whiskey bar piano, the shadow of a gunfighter who’s fallen a step slow, riding headlong into the rain in search of the next sunset.
These images lend an undeniable weight and immediacy to the album, but it’s the spectacularly bone-chilling, otherworldly reverberation of the pedal steel that stays with me every time I hear it. It’s there in the ending wash on the otherwise-amiable cowboy ballad “This World Can Be So Cruel”, and it’s revisited on the album’s final number, “One Key”. Here it resonates beside a wind chime lullaby as we drift along the river Styx, nestled beneath the stars and blissfully at peace with the horrors and the beauty of the world. – Justin Kownacki
