The Silent Ballet Compilation – Volume 16

Silent Ballet

GENRE: Post Rock, Electronic, Ambient, Dark Ambient, Soundscape, ExperimentalIt worth a try!

Label: Lost Children
Release date: 2010
Total running time: 1:08:37
Volume 16 marks the completion of the fourth year of The Silent Ballet Compilation Series. Throughout the series we have discovered a lot of noteworthy acts, rekindled the flame with old favorites, and watched the development of multiple musical scenes right before our eyes. We’re just as optimistic and excited about the future as we were four years ago, and every new release makes us as giddy as ever.
This edition is a first for the series; Volume 16 is the first compilation to contain a video track. Our gratitude goes out to The Sleepy Vines, who made this possible and has perhaps opened a door that will be investigated in the future.
A big thanks goes out to all the artists and labels who made this project possible. Relevant links can be found below; any support is greatly appreciated.

Walter Ehresman – The A.D.G. Project

Walter Ehresman

GENRE: Electronic, Ambient, Dark Ambient, Soundscape, ExperimentalIt worth a try!

Label: Petcord
Release date: 2010
Total running time: 0:52:00
Walter Ehresman from Austin, TX created the music of The A.D.G. Project for use with an art installation called the Ambient Dream Garden (which also explains the meaning of A.D.G. in the title) at the Burning Man festival in northwestern Nevada. Three long instrumental pieces dominate the album and make prominent use of improvised motifs played on electric bouzouki, sitar and oud. Additionally, by means of heavy digital processing, the original sound signal is transposed to a dense soundscape that could somehow be classified as darker ambient, though the music does not exactly fit into a niche, other than being experimental in nature.
Each piece has a story of its own like the opener Good-Bye, Pluto which could be understood as a comment on Pluto having lost its planetary status, thereby putting an end to the old nine planets solar system. Trench Sitar utilises the sound effects of a theremin played simultaneously with the sitar serving as background drone in real-time. A digital effects box, turns the solo voice on My Oud is Unspooling into some kind of blurry ambience with the lead instrument’s tones shining through. On The A.D.G. Project, Walter Ehresman demonstrates, that experimental ambient isn’t about reassembling digitally generated sound sources to a new entity, but also about how to play instruments and create structures that overcome arbitrary limits.

TRACKLIST
01 – Good-Bye, Pluto
02 – Trench Sitar
03 – My Oud Is Unspooling

Rho – Cedarleaf

Rho

GENRE: Electronic, Ambient, AcousticIt worth a try!

Label: No Source
Release date: 2010
Total running time: 0:43:18
Steve Setzepfandt and Josh Wittman are back with their second release on No-Source and third full-length album “Cedarleaf,” the follow-up to 2009′s “Glass Memories.” “Cedarleaf” is Rho’s most accessible album to date. It is a beautiful mix of electronic rhythms, synth swirls, and guitar driven melodies; a pop landscape with a mountain range of cinematic style. “Sun Justice” begins the album with soft ambient electronics, leading into the dark, electric guitar-heavy “Mississippi.” “K-Eyes” sees Rho switching it up a little, with keyboards handling a potent pop melody. The rest of the album flows like a soundtrack with each song tipping its hat to the next. This all leads up to the fantastic climax that is “Day Into Night,” a six-minute guitar-driven epic that crescendos into the shores of Post-Rock. Credits roll with night sounds, field recordings and soft synth pads as “The End Sleep” drifts into silence. This whole release comes highly recommended, especially for fans of Album Leaf / El Ten Eleven / Lymbyc Systym / Boards of Canada.

Taking it back to the roots, inspiration comes from the times of Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali, listening to old school rapping and scratches from Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash, comparing it with new school beats and styles like Trip-Hop + some ambient music to hold the communication with ancient humanity. That’s what new wave of Hip-Hop means in Arze Kareem’s opinion.

Brad Sucks – Out of It

Brad Sucks

GENRE: Rock, Alternative, IndieIt worth a try!

Label: Self Release
Release date: 2008
Total running time: 0:34:49
“Brad Sucks is the name of my one man band. I write, record and produce songs and put them on this website for people to download and hopefully share and enjoy. There are also some albums for sale.
In 2001, I started using the Internet (blogs, MP3s, P2P) to spread my music and not worrying so much about copyright violation. I’ve even been giving the source of my songs away for remixers to play with. I figured that spreading my music should be the number one goal and so far it’s worked out pretty well.
Despite giving my music away for free online, my songs have been licensed for television, played on commercial and campus radio, and I made enough money from licensing and sales to do a real pressing of my first CD: I Don’t Know What I’m Doing. I followed that up with Out of It in 2008.
I’ve also been involved in the open source community. I designed the default sounds for the popular instant messaging client Pidgin and have also released some open source packages for musicians: the Brad Sucks Digital Download Store, Gimme Some Money as well as many other projects.”

For Solacing Grief – When Solitude Resounds

For Solacing Grief

GENRE: Rock, Post Rock, Acoustic, SlowcoreIt worth a try!

Label: Acoustic Fireworks
Release date: 2009
Total running time: 0:10:37
Time gets lost again and again. The music appears as a last retreat in a hectic world. A certain solitude makes it easier to let go. A different course shapes happenings. Just playing the instrument and drifting in emerging sounds and improvisations becomes inspiration and animating spirit. The music starts to speak its own language without words. Little dreams arise and everything seems to disappear momentarily for a solacing grief.
Short passages and guitar-loops are the musical basis on which complete songs are being written. The style of playing leaves room for tones, melodies and harmonies to unfold. Things become aparent that might otherwise go unheeded. The purpose is to embed special moments and ideas in an entirety to keep up their musical and emotional effect in a completed arrangement.
Genres like Postrock, Slowcore, Acoustic, Folk and Indie can be found in the music of For Solacing Grief.

TRACKLIST
01 – Third Part To Fade Away
02 – Between Light And Embraces
03 – Missing The Tales To Dream
04 – Hope Above This Yawning Abyss

Horiso – View

Horiso

GENRE: Jazz, Electronic, Nu-Jazz, TrumpetIt worth a try!

Label: Breathe
Release date: 2010
Total running time: 0:44:20
Horiso is a one person music project released by netlabels. It’s a connection of improvised music and simple electronics. It’s a bit like a sound painting or freezing a moment.
Years ago I was playing in a band and after that I got fascinated by jazz trumpet player – Tomasz Stanko. I bought a trumpet and some piano midi controller and I’ve started the most amazing journey of my life. I have discovered many more musical masters in improvised music and while moving further in my inspirations, I was getting more in to playing.
Take a deep breathe of my stuff and try it. Maybe you will like it!
