My Bubba & Mi – How it’s done in Italy

Pop

My Bubba & Mi

GENRE: Blues, Folk, Pop, VocalIt worth a try!

Label: Beep! Beep! Back up the truck
Release date: 2010
Total running time: 0:36:00
My Bubba & Mi is a special female trio that reeled us in with their intriguing mix of folk, expert finger picking and vocal harmonies so warm they’ll melt the biggest glacier. They themselves are far more down-to-earth. “lullabies from the countryside”, is what the ladies call it.
The latter might be a more accurate description, as the trio headed to the sunny, wide fields of southern Italy to record their début. The story goes as follows. An Italian bar-owner was cycling through the city of Copenhagen on holiday. He was taken in by hypnotising sounds seeping through the window of a small bar nearby. Overpowered by his curiosity the man entered and saw My, Bubba and Mia performing for a small audience. A fan was born. The man invited the ladies to come to Italy to perform their music. “All right”, the threesome said and they left. A second invitation followed soon afterwards, this time to record a CD. “Agreed”, the answer was yet again and they packed their bags. Yes, that’s how simple life can be.
‘How it’s done in Italy’ is the mesmerizing début of My Bubba & Mi and furthermore the first Beep! Beep! Back up the Truck release from an international artist.

The Wind Whistles – Window Sills

The Wind Whistles

GENRE: Rock, Indie, Folk, Indie-Folk, PopIt worth a try!

Label: Aaahh Records
Release date: 2008
Total running time: 0:43:35
Tom and Liza are the Wind Whistles and they live together in the suburbs of Vancouver, Canada. As an indie folk duo, they both sing and both play acoustic instruments (guitar, bass). Sometimes they play alone and sometimes they bring friends, more times not. They think they sound like a cross of Lemonheads and Violent Femmes while people tell them they sound like a cross of the Decemberists and the Moldy Peaches. Beginning in the spring of 2006, they’ve done the usual artist thing: demo, radio, festivals, tours, friends and lots and lots of shows. In 2007, they have released their first full length “window sills” and try to spread it around as much as they can. That’s why they have decided to re-release their 12-track LP under a creative commons license. Aaahh-records, your new favourite netlabel for absolutely charming music, is very proud to have “window sills” their first release and will do its best to promote the album. In April, Tom and Liza have quit their jobs and headed across Canada with the the Greenbelt Collective, then they will head alone to Europe in May, June, July, August, and back across North America in September and October starting from the East Coast. Annually the Wind Whistles organize the Annually the Wind Whistles organize the celebrated local Beanstalk Folk Festival; a festival in which the ‘Folk’ is a loose term for some of their favourite artists that aren’t rock or too loud. The Wind Whistles are notorious do-it-yourselfers and love to meet generous and creative people that make beautiful things happen. So, please do not hesitate to get in touch with them.

Spheriot – Bekennerschreiben

Spheriot

GENRE: Rock, KrautRock, Indie Pop, Experimental

Label: WM Recordings
Release date: 2008
Total running time: 0:55:26
Here we are: Neither young nor innocent or idealistically transfigured any more. The right time for a “Bekennerschreiben” (claim of responsibility), to see what a variety of tastes a single ingredient like myself can provide a selfdestructive cannibal with.
Actually, I vaguely planned to do something more straight forward in one genre and have more singalong suitable lyrics. But sticking to the single principle of only doing what I want (against all good advice), it turned out to be a style mix quite similar to my first album Livingroom orbits.
I guess, this time I dived even a bit deeper into my personal variety of styles. In the end I allowed myself to accept them as what they are, without trying to match everything into my idea of a concept. So if it sounds like Krautrock-Techno, damned hard rock or a gay songwriter all mashed up in one indie pop stew, then this is just what I am.
Taste for yourself!

Uniform Motion – Pictures

Uniform Motion

GENRE: Indie, Folk, Pop, ExperimentalIt worth a try!

Label: Aaahh Records
Release date: 2010
Total running time: 0:33:17
Uniform Motion are not an ordinary band. At least not in the original meaning of the word- this bunch of young Anglo-French men are more than a musical formation, they emerged and grew as an entire art project, combining their three foundations of creative work: words, sounds and looks. Claiming to be influenced and driven by the things in life that, as the band states in their biography, “hit us”, their understanding of the all underlying principle of life descibes a continual straight line of projections which is only changed through major events.

Entertainment For The Braindead – Hydrophobia

Pop

Entertainment for the Braindead

GENRE: Folk, Pop, Acoustic, Vocal, AmbientIt worth a try!

Label: Aaahh Records
Release date: 2008
Total running time: 0:45:00
Entertainment for the Braindead is Julia Kotowski from Cologne and her music can be considered as acoustic, private, fragile and touching. Therefore she coined the term “acoustic dilettante post-something”, which refers to her unique D.I.Y. attitude that goes all along in the process of creating her music.
Just like her debut “Hypersomnia”, her new EP “Hydrophobia” is full of heart and soul and was created in her parents’ living room. There she spent hours in front of her laptop, recording track by track with a simple USB-microphone. Behind closed doors – with an open heart and mind – these colourful sounds and melodies of “Hydrophobia” emerged. Ukulele, guitar and flute are ever-present instruments, just like her unconventional percussion that consists of jars, cans, boxes, drawers and peppermills. Her intimate songs are detailed snapshots of thoughts and feelings that are part of Julia and her surroundings – sometimes filtered and reflected, sometimes pure and transparent.

The Sleeping Tree

GENRE: Folk, Indie, Pop, Songwriter, GuitarIt worth a try!

Label: 12REC
Release date: 2009
Total running time: 0:29:53
The Sleeping Tree is Giulio Frausin from Italy. In the Spring of 2008, Filippo Aldovini of Zymogen Netlabel recommended this decent guy to us. We got in for a chat, failed to meet in Düsseldorf but agreed on a release somewhat later the year. Giulio’s blueprint of low-key Pop- and Folk music was absorbing from the first seconds of his heart rendering “Love is an Eternal Lie” hit single, online as a demo version at myspace back then. The Sleeping Tree appeared with a bitter-sweet street ballad on our jubelee compilation (“You’ve Got To Be Strong”), afterwards Giulio locked himself in to record and produce his debut album “Leaves and Roots”.
