Label: Miga
Release date: 2010
Total running time: 0:30:50
Tom Cary are believers of the “do it yourself” with a hardworking and combative perspective. They´ve become one of the most interesting projects sprung from the Spanish underground thanks to their sound and attitude. Powerful, percussive, mutant, raw, electric and exciting are some of the adjectives used to describe their live shows and recordings.
Steve Albini produced their first album, “That´s right! Clean your soul” in 2008. In 2009 they have released “Grace of the pure hearts”, a compilation of b-sides and rarities from their first period. They are planning the recording of their second studio album with Steve Albini in 2010.
Despite not being well-known for the big audience, the 2008-2009 tour included 60 shows around the world, all of which were possible thanks to the support of an audience who love music in its pure state. They´ve taken part successfully in festivals such as South by Southwest 2009 (Austin, U.S.), Rock al Parque 2009 (Bogotá, Colombia), FIB Benicàssim 2006 (Castellón, Spain), FNB 2009 (Caracas, Venezuela), Biennale Europea (Bari, Italia, 2008), etc.

Jonny Rumble – JR

Jonny Rumble

GENRE: Rock, Indie, Power Pop, Garage RockIt worth a try!

Label: Rock Proper
Release date: 2010
Total running time: 0:30:42
In 2008, the boys of Jonny Rumble put their collective frustrations into Almost Dead, their third full-length release. In blasting an eloquent and full-throttled critique of our misguided modern social and political state, the album served up the bitter rebellion and social conscience of early punk culture with a wickedly melodic edge. It was “a finger pointing, blame laying manifesto,” according to vocalist/guitarist Brian Webb.
Now, after several well-received interim singles (not to mention a string of bad luck that included hurricanes, hazardous jobs, jail, stolen vans, burglaries, broken bones, busted teeth and severe burns), Jonny Rumble is back with the a new full-length titled JR, an explosive mix of power pop, garage rock and alt-country. The album features the monster single “BRZRKR,” the liltingly psychedelic “Stumped” and the beautiful piano and pedal steel-driven “Time.” Rounding out Jonny Rumble’s line-up are Patrick O’Connor (vocals, keys, guitar), Jeremy Pryor (vocals, bass) and Seth Thomas (vocals, drums). JR the album was released on vinyl as a limited edition on June 15, 2010.

Smoke Fish – Life Ain’t Pink

Smoke Fish

GENRE: Rock, Indie, Post PunkIt worth a try!

Label: afmusic
Release date: 2009
Total running time: 0:43:45
The entire album of SMOKE FISH scores with draft, superb lyrics and plenty of variety in interaction with Post Punk, Pop and modern Rock. However, what makes “Life Ain’t Pink” so fascinating is the keen sense of great melodies and the courage to something special. The strength of SMOKE FISH’s debut album not only lies in its influence of those Electronic-, Mariachi-, African and Oriental tunes, but also in the fact that it sounds as if these fusions belong together.
The opening track “Wake Up” is the perfect soundtrack for the beginning of a surreal trip at sunrise. Following the different chapters of this album, the “travelling” listener blinks into the warm shining sun, then finds himself standing in the rain without any umbrella. He meets catchy songs between PIXIES and POP (“Mary Prankster”), experience roller coaster rides between cool cleanparts and supreme riffs (“Cigarettes & Family”), african rhythms on the crest of ‘New Wave Of New Wave’ (“My Eyes”) and furious Funk Fusion of Mariachi and urban beats (“Tango With Jesus”).
Uptempo tracks, such as “Hey! Talk!” and “Manifest Destiny”, convince with much drive, “Juvenile” and “Strange Identity Effect” are chary ballads with a lot of emotion. The single “Insane Inside” with its firm Rock-Refrain, Beach-Boys-Bridge and Chanson-like verses reminds of the best days of BLUR and PULP.

Label: Aaahh Records
Release date: 2008
Total running time: 0:43:35
Tom and Liza are the Wind Whistles and they live together in the suburbs of Vancouver, Canada. As an indie folk duo, they both sing and both play acoustic instruments (guitar, bass). Sometimes they play alone and sometimes they bring friends, more times not. They think they sound like a cross of Lemonheads and Violent Femmes while people tell them they sound like a cross of the Decemberists and the Moldy Peaches. Beginning in the spring of 2006, they’ve done the usual artist thing: demo, radio, festivals, tours, friends and lots and lots of shows. In 2007, they have released their first full length “window sills” and try to spread it around as much as they can. That’s why they have decided to re-release their 12-track LP under a creative commons license. Aaahh-records, your new favourite netlabel for absolutely charming music, is very proud to have “window sills” their first release and will do its best to promote the album. Andy Wagner – Those Who Forgive

Andy Wagner

GENRE: Rock, IndieIt worth a try!

Label: Rock Proper
Release date: 2009
Total running time: 0:25:44
Andy Wagner must love bad weather. His third record, Those Who Forgive, is a complex meteorolgy of bedroom tsunamis, drunk midnight thunder and unexpected frosts. These songs take a kind of delight, that is neither cynical nor ironic, in reporting the daily sadnesses we endure, the sadnesses that remind us we are, in fact, truly alive. Recorded in a week with Matt Dewine at
Pieholden Studios in Rantoul, IL, it is only appropriate that this record was made in tornado country. This time out, Wagner whipped up a band, tracked almost everything live, and whirl-winded, on the strength of Ben Clarke’s bass and Matt Martin’s drums, this collection of songs into being. Songs like “Sending My Love” that range from blustery rock to quiet drizzled ballads in “My Blue Sea,” from gale force to a storm’s eye respite; all story-told with detailed immediacy. Like a field reporter at a hurricane site, Wagner makes poetic the particulars of being lashed by the elements.

02 – Live In a Dream
03 – Sending My Love

Steve Eck and the Midnight Still – Drag It Out, Burn It Down

Steve Eck and the Midnight Still

GENRE: Rock, Dark rock, BluesIt worth a try!

Label: Rock Proper
Release date: 2010
Total running time: 0:29:40
“Steve Eck plays well arranged, dark rock that has tastes of rockabilly, blues, and zydeco. On Saturday night at Carrollton Station the local singer-songwriter was joined by an accordionist, a double bass player, and a drummer. Eck stuck to his black electric guitar. Though the songs were consistently quality, the best part about the show was Eck’s voice. He got real emotive with his vocal chords, almost like he was exorcising demons.” – Jason Sange

Innocent Bandits – Ceremonies & Spells

Innocent Bandits

GENRE: Rock, Indie, Lo-Fi, Experimental PopIt worth a try!

Label: Headphonica
Release date: 2010
Total running time: 0:32:01
This album was about putting everything on the table. It was about not thinking about anything, but feeling. To get rid of a whole past that doesn’t suit the present anymore. It was about not judging any ideas that come through as good or bad, but to accept them and to go with the flow of creativity. To not worry about perfection in terms of music or life because the truth is that the only perfection is to fully accept that we are imperfect, and that in itself is the perfect way to be.

Andy Wagner – Horse Year

Andy Wagner

GENRE: Rock, Indie, Country RockIt worth a try!

Label: Rock Proper
Release date: 2003
Total running time: 0:34:31
Horse Year plays like a funeral mass, each track an ethereally-charged dirge that draws us in. “Weak in the Knees” churns to life amid a settling fog, regretful, accompanied by a church organ send-off. “Don’t worry ‘bout me / You can still carry on / ‘Cause I’ll be dead when you’re gone,” Wagner opines, though you might imagine this as the message of a man looking back from the next world. “Nothing to Defend” juxtaposes soaring guitar riffs and whiskey bar piano, the shadow of a gunfighter who’s fallen a step slow, riding headlong into the rain in search of the next sunset.
These images lend an undeniable weight and immediacy to the album, but it’s the spectacularly bone-chilling, otherworldly reverberation of the pedal steel that stays with me every time I hear it. It’s there in the ending wash on the otherwise-amiable cowboy ballad “This World Can Be So Cruel”, and it’s revisited on the album’s final number, “One Key”. Here it resonates beside a wind chime lullaby as we drift along the river Styx, nestled beneath the stars and blissfully at peace with the horrors and the beauty of the world. – Justin Kownacki
