Bosques de mi Mente – Nueve días de invierno

Bosques de mi Mente

GENRE: Classical, Contemporary Classical, Minimalism, Piano, AmbientIt worth a try!

Label: Clinical Archives
Release date: 2010
Total running time: 0:34:04
“Nine days of Winter” is an album of spontaneous, minimalist music for piano. By mid february my piano was to be tuned, and each time that happens I think that is a waste not using that days in which the piano keeps an almost-perfect tuning to record something. As I had no new stuff for piano, I decided to call my friends and fellow musicians from Madrid to meet during 9 days just to play, create spontaneous music and record everything, in order to publish the music later.
Unfortunately, none of my friends could join me for that nine days, so I decided to play and record them myself. The process took place between the 20th and 28th of February, days of cold weather, rain, wind and snow here in Madrid. This album is the result of that nine days of winter, a disc of melancholic, intimate, minimalist music. The songs are all improvised as they were recorded just while the music was being played, directly in first takes. Hope you’ll enjoy it.The cover pic is the work of my good friend and best photographer Diego Sevilla.

Jozef van Wissem – A Priori

Jozef van Wissem

GENRE: Classical, MinimalismIt worth a try!

Label: INCUNABULUM
Release date: 2008
Total running time: 0:37:23
Jozef Van Wissem’s favorite compositional device is the palindrome. The Dutch-born, Brooklyn-based lutenist plays pieces forward, then backward, creating music that is potentially without beginning or end. Although this strategy is rooted in 17th century compositional practice, it still serves his agenda of rescuing his archaic instrument from history’s dustbin. His use of mirror-image structures is as informed by Lacanian psychoanalysis as by centuries-old repertoire. A former guitarist with a taste for country blues, Van Wissem came to the instrument as a way of affirming with his essential European-ness; ironically he used an artifact of the Renaissance to accomplish the decidedly post-Freudian pursuit of self-consciously establishing a self-identity. On an even more symbolic level, by constructing pieces that begin where they end and are therefore potentially endless, he subverts the march of time; why can’t obsolescence also be reversed?
On other records, Van Wissem has re-contextualized the lute by treating its sounds with electronics, juxtaposing it with field recordings of large public transit facilities, using it to improvise with Tetuzi Akiyama, or enlisting Mauricio Bianchi to transform its resonance into grim noise. A Priori offers his unadulterated take on the instrument, performed without accompaniment or outboard effects. Its sonorities, articulated in unhurried cadences, may sound ancient, but the language of dissonant harmonies, tone clusters, and rare bluesy flourishes to which he applies them is rooted in the 20th century avant-garde, not the time of bards in tights. The way Van Wissem traces and retraces A Priori’s seven palindromes, denying the listener any resolution or catharsis, is also pretty contemporary in its attitude of refusal; has there ever been a time besides now when more musicians refuted the expectations of audiences and authorities?
A Priori does not reward casual listening. Its slow cadences and well-proportioned tones feel contemplative, but the lack of pay-off makes the music potentially maddening; it actually stymies linear thought. If you want easily approachable Van Wissem, try his album he and James Blackshaw made as the Brethren of the Free Spirit. This record is best approached as obsessively as it was played. Spin it over and over and eventually the pieces really do lose beginning and end, seeming instead to hover in a timeless now. – By Bill Meyer

TrianguliZona – Flossy

TrianguliZona

GENRE: Jazz, Nu Jazz, Experimental, MinimalismIt worth a try!

Label: Test Tube
Release date: 2007
Total running time: 0:42:52
«Under the media hype-fueled turmoil, in deeper underground zones lives a multitude of organisms, which discreetly threads its way seeking the opportunity to call our attention. Such is the case of the Croatian collective TrianguliZona. Ivan Kapec (electric guitar and electronics), Andrej Jakuš (trumpet, flugelhorn and electronics), Janko Novoselić (drums) and Vladimir Končar (video), have been working in the confluence of different languages in modern music, a complex reality which, pointing at several directions, blurs the borders between genres and styles. From electro-jazz with distant references to 70’s electric Miles Davis, to ambient-flavored experimentalism, to Steve Reich’s minimalism, going through dub and loop techniques, all framed with a live improvisation setting, there are recognizable signs in the music of TrianguliZona. This blend results in a homogenous sound, with an experimental flavor. Instant composition as a result of the sound-image interaction, in which sound and vision acquires a special place in live performances. The main impression is jazz-fusion, based on progressive electric guitar, trumpet with pedal and electronic effects, and this mighty groove, balanced with creativity and good taste. Melodic and hypnotic, delicate and subtle, the TrianguliZona sound is likely to become the soundtrack to that special road trip. It grabs us, sooner or later.» – Eduardo Chagas

ETI

GENRE: Electronic, ambient, soundscape, minimalism

Label: Phonocake
Release date: 2009

We just apply the brakes. Tea bowls, pieces of cake and art are perceivable only in slow motion. Relatively free structured sound design let the issue of music and antimusic arise. Design studies and sound collages by a Dresden-based solo-artist, who is otherwise active in the fields of Electro and Hip Hop. Watching from a crumb perspective. Musical Koans, which only illusionary follow conventions. Conventions, that are basically already discarded. Indeed the single tracks ‘see’ and ‘meet’ each other, but do not really find together. Here you find a story of disengagement und passing one and another. Those, who try to catch the complexity will be left behind with a hand full of sand, which leaks through the fingers.
